Apple Lytes Solution is a carefully formulated liquid complementary feed designed to replace key electrolytes and encourage drinking, helping to support effective rehydration and maintain optimum performance.

The product provides a carefully balanced ratio of essential electrolytes – sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium – in a highly palatable liquid form. Apple Lytes Solution promotes water intake, restores electrolytes lost through sweating and helps maintain performance during and after exercise.

The formulation is low in sugar and suitable for all horses and ponies. Thanks to its highly appetising apple and cherry flavour, it is easily mixed into feed and readily accepted, even by fussy feeders.

Manufactured by Equine America, Apple Lytes Solution is BETA NOPS and UFAS accredited. This makes it suitable for horses competing under FEI regulations and the Rules of Racing, by reducing the risk of prohibited substances being present.

Where required, the product is also available in a convenient paste or powder form.

The importance of electrolytes for horses

An increase in body temperature caused by exercise, transport or high environmental temperatures leads to sweating. The evaporation of sweat helps the horse regulate body temperature, but sweating also results in the loss of fluids and vital body salts, known as electrolytes.

The key electrolytes are sodium (Na), chloride (Cl), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg). These minerals play essential roles in muscle contraction, nervous system function and maintaining fluid balance around cells.

Potassium is usually supplied in sufficient quantities in the horse’s diet, as most forages such as pasture, hay and haylage are naturally high in potassium. In contrast, sodium and chloride are present at much lower levels in forages and must be supplied daily, even for horses in light work.

Compound feeds such as cubes and mixes may provide some sodium and chloride in the form of salt, but intakes can be insufficient, particularly for horses in work. Hard-working horses, especially in hot or humid conditions, lose significant amounts of electrolytes and water through sweat, which cannot always be replaced through the normal daily ration.

A horse in moderate work, trotting and cantering, can lose 5–7 litres of fluid and 50–70 g of electrolytes per hour, with losses increasing further as work intensity, duration or environmental temperature rises.

Maintaining hydration and replacing lost electrolytes is therefore essential not only for elite competition horses, but also for all horses and ponies that sweat after work – from Pony Club activities and long summer hacks to international eventers, show jumpers and dressage horses.

Because horse sweat contains higher concentrations of sodium and chloride than other body fluids, supplemental electrolytes must be provided in correct proportions. This helps maintain the desire to drink, restore fluid and electrolyte balance, support recovery and ensure continued optimum performance.

Directions for use

Mix well into feed. Clean, fresh drinking water must always be available.

For 500 kg horses:

• Light work – 30 ml per day

• After strenuous exercise or heavy sweating – up to 60 ml per day

• Maximum daily amount: 60 ml

For smaller ponies:

• Light work – 15 ml per day

• After strenuous exercise or heavy sweating – up to 30 ml per day

• Maximum daily amount: 30 ml
